Lions Drop Pitcher's Duel at Pacific

March 30, 2018

Box Score

LMU led 2-0 headed into the bottom of the sixth, but Pacific (9-19, 2-6 WCC) scored twice in the sixth and once in the seventh as the Tigers stole a 3-2 victory over the Lions (13-13, 6-2 WCC) on Friday night from Klein Family Field in Stockton, Calif.

THE PITCHER'S DUEL: Sophomore Josh Agnew and junior Ricky Reynoso locked horns in a pitcher's duel on Friday night, with Agnew tossing 6.2 innings and allowing three runs on six hits while striking out five. The right-hander, who ultimately took the loss and fell to 3-2 on the year, was outdueled by Reynoso who allowed just two runs (one earned) on three hits and a walk over 7.0 frames. Reynoso benefitted from the run in the seventh, putting him in line for the victory as he improved to 2-1. Ryan Shreve took over in the eighth for the Tigers, tossing the final 2.0 shutout frames to record his second save of the year.

OFFENSIVE LION OF THE GAME: Despite hitting the ball hard throughout the game, LMU managed just four hits. Billy Wilson, Niko Pacheco, Brandon Shearer and Dylan Hirsch all had one, as Wilson and Pacheco each scored a run. Pacheco's single in the fourth extended his hitting streak to six games.

EXTRA-BASE HITS HURT LATE: Trailing 2-0 in the bottom of the sixth, Pacific received a leadoff triple from Keaton Glover before Alex LeForestier delivered a sacrifice fly to cut the lead to 2-1. James Free followed three pitches later with his fourth homer of the year, tying the game with a towering blast to right field. Now tied at 2-2 in the bottom of the seventh, Agnew got the first two men without incident, but surrendered a two-out double to Tyler Ryan, ending his night and sending LMU into the bullpen. Braydon Salzman took over and allowed the inherited go-ahead runner to score on a double to right-centerfield off the bat of Matthew Tarantino one player later.

BOX SCORE NOTES: LMU's four hits are tied for the fewest this season (fifth time) ... the quality start from Agnew was his fifth of the season ... LMU is now 5-2 in Agnew starts this year.

LION NOTES: Senior Jamey Smart went 0-for-4 in the loss, snapping a 12-game hit streak ... LMU began the year 3-10 for the first time since 2010 ... that 2010 team went on to win five straight and 10 of the next 11 ... the Lions are now 10-3 since the 3-10 start this year, including winning seven straight to start the string ... Billy Wilson was hit by a pitch leading off the game, and has now been hit by a pitch 12 times this year ... it was also the 48th time he has been hit in his career - one shy of the LMU record held by Jim McAnany (49 from 1984-87).

ON DECK: LMU will conclude the three-game series with Pacific on Saturday at 1 p.m. LMU will look to win its third straight WCC series, and improve to 8-0 in series against Pacific all time.
