Free Passes, Strikeouts Hurt Lions in 10-2 Loss

LMU pitching walked eight and hit three more, and UC Irvine (13-11) exploded for a pair of lopsided innings to earn a 10-2 victory over the Lions (12-12) on Tuesday night from Anteater Ballpark.

BIG INNINGS: UC Irvine scored five times in the third and four more in the sixth en route to running away with the win. The 'Eaters scored the five runs on three hits, four walks and a hit-by-pitch in the third inning before posting four runs on four hits, a walk and a hit batter in the sixth.

OFFENSIVE LION OF THE GAME: Senior Jamey Smart delivered all the production LMU could muster in the setback, shooting a two-out two-RBI single into right-centerfield in the third inning to briefly give LMU a 2-1 lead. The single extended Smart's hitting streak to 11 games.

BOX SCORE NOTES: While LMU's pitching staff struggled with the free pass, LMU's offense also struggled ÃÆ'Æ'¢ÃÆ'¢'¬" striking out 14 times in the loss ÃÆ'¢Ã¢'¬¦ the eight walks were one short of the season high set on February 25 vs. Oregon ÃÆ'¢Ã¢'¬¦ the 14 strikeouts offensively were the most this season (previous: 13, at #11 UCLA on March 6) ÃÆ'¢Ã¢'¬¦ LMU used a season-high seven pitchers ÃÆ'¢Ã¢'¬¦ Nick Anderson went 3-for-5 with two runs scored, a homer and two RBI for UCI ÃÆ'¢Ã¢'¬¦ the homer was the first of the year for Anderson and got the scoring started in the five-run third ÃÆ'¢Ã¢'¬¦ Holden Christian was charged with the loss after allowing five runs on three hits and two walks over 0.2 innings of work ÃÆ'¢Ã¢'¬¦ the loss dropped Christian to 0-2 on the year ÃÆ'¢Ã¢'¬¦ Jake Lachemann was credited with the win and moved to 1-0 after tossing two perfect innings of relief ÃÆ'¢Ã¢'¬¦ CJ Fernandezees and Josh Robins proved to be bright spots on the mound for LMU, with the pair combining for 5.1 scoreless innings of relief and six strikeouts.

LION NOTES: LMU began the year 3-10 for the first time since 2010 ÃÆ'¢Ã¢'¬¦ that 2010 team went on to win five straight and 10 of the next 11 ÃÆ'¢Ã¢'¬¦ the Lions are now 9-2 since the 3-10 start this year, including winning seven straight to start the string.
