Opening a three-game West Coast Conference and PCH Cup series with Pepperdine on Friday night, LMU (10-11, 3-1 WCC) suffered a 6-2 setback at the hands of the Waves (10-11, 2-2 WCC) from Page Stadium.
WIN STREAK OVER: The loss snapped a seven-game win streak for LMU. That seven-game win streak was the longest for the Lions since winning eight straight from March 24-April 4, 2017.
OFFENSIVE LIONS OF THE GAME: LMU managed just eight hits in the loss, with six of them coming from the first two spots in the order. Billy Wilson went 3-for-4 with a run scored and a pair of doubles while hitting out of the leadoff spot, and Nick Sogard batted 2-for-4 with a run scored and one RBI while batting second.
THE STARTERS: Right-hander Wil Jensen got the start and earned the victory for Pepperdine, allowing just two runs on eight hits over 7.1 innings of work. The victory moved Jensen to 4-0 on the season, and he now sports a 0.86 ERA. LMU starter Codie Paiva was saddled with the loss after allowing five runs (four earned) on nine hits over 6.0 innings of work. The loss dropped Paiva to 2-3 on the season.
LEADING FROM THE START: Brandt Belk got the scoring started early on Friday night, launching his first homer of the year while batting as the second hitter in the game. That home run put Pepperdine on top, and the Waves never trailed in the contest, scoring once more in the third, once in the fourth and twice in the sixth to open up a 5-0 lead headed to the bottom of the sixth. LMU scored twice in the sixth, but failed to score any further while allowing another run to Pepperdine in the eighth.
