LOS ANGELES – The 2018-19 Men's Basketball season officially opens with LMU's first game of the year on Tuesday at 5:00 p.m.. The Lions host Westcliff in a non-conference matchup that not only kicks off the season, but also a Tuesday doubleheader with the women's team hosting UCLA immediately following.
"We know that we have a lot of guys that play with great energy," said Head Coach
Mike Dunlap. "We are able to pressure the ball. We share the ball and the pass has become our friend. We have an exciting brand of basketball. We go up and down the court and continue to pressure teams. That's a style that LMU is used to."
LMU returns 84 percent (1876 points out of 2227) of the team's scoring this year, which comes from 10 returning players. The senior class, made up of All-WCC Preseason Team member
James Batemon, last year's WCC steals leader
Jeffery McClendon, and the return of fifth-year big man
Petr Herman, is poised to lead the Lions in all areas of the game.
The Lions were the only West Coast Conference team in 2017-18 to have two players with at least six double-double games. Both
Mattias Markusson and
Eli Scott had six games of double-doubles last season, moving them both to a tie for 24th on LMU's career-list. Batemon recorded the lone points/assists double-double, and the first for the Lions since Dec. 2016, with his 13 point and 10 assist game in the PCH Cup win over Pepperdine. Scott, Markusson, and Batemon's 12-combined double-doubles are the most in the program since the 15 in 2010-11.
The Lions also led the conference in offensive rebounds per game a year ago, averaging just over 12 per outing. LMU's 12.1 offensive boards per contest ranked 42nd of 351 NCAA Division I teams. Of the available rebounds while the Lions had possession of the ball, a league-high 34.7 percent were grabbed by LMU to extend possessions. 91 percent (925 rebounds of 1012) of last year's rebounding return to the court for 2018-19.
The game will be streamed live on theW.tv for those unable to attend, with live stats also available.
