LOS ANGELES – The LMU men's soccer team picked up its second straight win and has now won three of the last four games after defeating Santa Clara 2-1 on the road on Sunday. After today's win, the Lions are now 1-0 in conference play and 4-7 on the season. With the victory, LMU snapped a four-game unbeaten streak for Santa Clara (4-6-1).
Â
Andres Jimenez of SCU scored the game's first goal at the 21:02 mark, picking up a loose ball inside the 18 and sending his shot low and right past LMU goalkeeper
Paul Lewis from 15 yards out. The Broncos held their 1-0 lead until the 88-minute mark when the Lions secured two goals in the game's final two minutes minutes to earn the 2-1 comeback victory.
Â
At 88:01, Lions midfielder
Antonio Porreco lofted a service inside the 18 from the left side over Broncos goalkeeper Henning Jolivet which freshman
CJ Neville headed in to tie the match up 1-1.
Â
The dagger came with 29 seconds remaining in the match as Santa Clara fouled on the left side of the 18, giving the Lions a free kick. Porreco delivered another service that freshman
Jack Sauls tracked and headed in past Jolivet for the game-winner. Â
Â
Neville's goal was the first of his collegiate career, and this was goal number two on the season for Sauls.
Â
LMU out-shot SCU 15-10 in the match, with a 9-2 advantage in shots on goal. The Lions also held a 6-4 edge in corner kicks on the day.
Â
"It was the tale of two halves." Lions head coach
Paul Krumpe said. "There was about a 25-mile-an-hour wind blowing in one direction, so we weathered through it in the first half and in the second half we really had our way with them and we were very, very dangerous. The challenge for the guys was to try to get one goal in the first 20 and another goal in the second 20 of the second half, and they decided to wait and score twice in the last two minutes."
Â
"We talked about trying to be dangerous on crosses, serving balls across the box and heading them in, and that's how we got our goals," Krumpe continued. "The guys kept plugging away, were very resilient and really believed in what they were doing and finally got rewarded."
Â
Today's match was the second of a five-game road stretch as they previously played at New Mexico and they go on to Portland (Oct. 12), Gonzaga (Oct. 14) and UCLA (Oct. 20) before hosting the first home WCC game of the season vs. Pacific on Oct. 26 at 7 p.m.
