May 15, 2017 LMU junior right-hander Cory Abbott has been named Rawlings WCC Pitcher of the Week for the fourth time this year, it was announced on Monday. Abbott had previously claimed the award on March 27, April 17 and May 1.
Abbott went 2-0 over two starts last week, allowing just six hits over 11.0 innings of work with 15 strikeouts. The native of San Diego, Calif. got the start at UC Riverside on a "staff day" and logged 2.0 scoreless frames with three strikeouts and was credited with the win. He then took the ball in his regular spot in the rotation on Saturday at Gonzaga, throwing a complete-game shutout and striking out 12 to even the series at one game apiece.
The Saturday night shutout was Abbott's second of the season, and it lowered his ERA to 0.15 in WCC play (1 ER in 60 IP). Abbott, who has allowed just one earned run over his last 62.1 innings, is now 11-1 on the season, tied for the national lead in victories with Oregon State's Jake Thompson. His 1.60 ERA also leads the WCC and is 10th in the nation.
LMU will play four games to finish off the regular season this week, first traveling to Oregon to meet the Ducks at 6 p.m. on Wednesday night. The Lions will then travel to Portland for a three-game WCC series beginning on Friday.
