Abbott Nabs Another WCC, National Player of the Week

May 1, 2017

LMU junior right-hander Cory Abbott has been named one of Collegiate Baseball's National Players of the Week, in addition to earning his third Rawlings WCC Pitcher of the Week selection, it was announced on Monday. Abbott, who threw a perfect game against BYU earlier this year, now finds himself as a two-time selection on the national level.

The native of San Diego, Calif. dazzled again on Saturday against San Diego, tossing 8.0 innings and allowing three unearned runs on three hits and no walks while striking out a career-best 15 hitters to guide LMU to a 10-3 victory to even a three-game West Coast Conference series. Abbott, who dropped his ERA to 1.84 on the season, did not allow a hit over the first six innings, with the only two men to reach to that point coming on a dropped third strike and a hit by pitch. The 15 strikeouts are one short of a program record, as Sandor Demosthenes punched out 16 against Gonzaga on April 19, 1996.

For his efforts, Abbott was credited with the win and moved to 9-1 on the season, remaining as the national leader in the category. With the strong start, Abbott is now 7-0 with a 0.18 ERA over seven starts and 51 innings against WCC teams.

The Lions, ranked #23 this week according to D1Baseball.com, have now won eight of the last nine games, 19 of 23, and 22 of 28, and sit in second place in the WCC with an off week coming due to finals and graduation. After the off week, LMU will return to action on Tuesday, May 9 when it travels to UC Riverside for a 6 p.m. game.
