Looking for a series sweep over Cal Poly on Sunday, LMU (8-8) allowed 16 runs on 16 hits en route to dropping a 16-1 decision to the Mustangs (4-11) from Baggett Stadium.
The Mustangs collected 10 extra-base hits in the win, including seven doubles, two triples and a homer.
Kyle Marinconz had three doubles as part of a 3-for-5 day, while Bradlee Beesley managed two doubles and three runs scored. Elijah Skipps also helped Cal Poly to the whopping extra-base hit number, contributing a triple and a homer. Josh George and Nick Meyer each notched four RBI, while Alex McKenna and George joined Beesley with three runs scored.
The game was scoreless headed into the middle innings, but that is where Cal Poly blew the game open, scoring three in the fourth, three in the fifth, five in the sixth, and five more in the seventh.
LMU plated its only run of the game in the seventh inning when Phil Caulfield slapped his third hit of the day to third base to bring home Niko Decolati. Caulfield was 3-for-4, while Decolati managed the only other Lion hit in the loss.
Right-hander Cory Abbott was charged with the loss after allowing six runs on six hits and three walks over 5.0 innings. Abbott, who fell to 2-1 with the decision, did manage to post a new season high with five strikeouts.
Bobby Ay seemingly had his best stuff working in the start for Cal Poly, allowing just one hit over the first 3.1 innings, but he left the game with an apparent injury. Righty Michael Clark dealt the next 3.2 innings, surrendering just one run on three hits to earn the victory and move to 1-0 on the year. Austin Dondanville finished the game on the bump, retiring all six batters he faced â€" including striking out four in a non-save situation.
LMU, which has not lost a weekend series this year, will look to record its first midweek victory of the season when it hosts USC at 6 p.m. on Tuesday from Page Stadium.
