Los Angeles, Calif. - The LMU softball team (9-12) had a solid first game, when they utilized the mercy rule to defeat North Dakota in 5 innings. Four Lions had a multi-hit game, Irma Sanchez led the charge with her 3-for-4 performance.
Sanchez, the leadoff hitter, began the game with a single through the right side. It wasn't long before Sanchez was up again in the 2nd where she got her second hit of the game. The single scored two Lions and gave LMU the lead, which they held the rest of game.
LMU had a defining 4 run 4th inning, beginning with Sanchez, she had a shot up the middle for her third hit of the game. Lindsey Matoi came to the plate with runners on first and second, she capitalized with a single to right, scoring one. Brown doubled down the left field line and two Lions crossed the plate. Alex Finie would pick up a hit of her own and Katie Manley scored the final RBI of the inning, to give the Lions a 6-1 lead.
In the 5th LMU needed 2 runs in order to meet the mercy rule, which is an 8-run lead after 5 innings. With the pressure on, Tayor Lockwood smashed a pinch-hit double to right center. Matoi followed in suit with a double of her own scoring Lockwood. To win the game, Amanda Dirks came to the plate with 2 outs, runner on second. Dirks drilled a hit to right field, scoring Matoi and run ruling North Dakota, with final score of 9-1.
In game one, Sanchez finished 3-for-4 with 2 RBIs and a run scored. Matoi had herself another 2-for-2 game, with 2 RBIs and 2 runs score. Finie had a 3-for-3 performance today and Alicia Brown also had a multi-hit game going 2-for-3 with 2 RBIs. In the second game of the day, the Lions took on Arizona, facing a 10-0 setback. Brown recorded the lone hit for the Lions with her 4th inning single to right field.
The LMU Softball Tournament is over for the weekend but the Lions are not gone for long, they take on Texas for a single game Tuesday on Smith Field. First pitch is at 2pm.
