LOS ANGELES - The 20th-ranked LMU women's water polo team will play their home opener on Friday, hosting California Lutheran at the Burns Aquatics Center at 3:30 pm.
Regardless of the forecast, the Lions (4-6) will look to continue their progress in putting the pieces together in this first month of the season.
"We have a lot of players we are asking new things from this season. Whether in is new players to our program adjusting to college water polo or returning players in which we are asking to fill new roles, we are learning how to put all that together," said Head Coach Kyle Witt. "We have played a very tough schedule and getting a split last week the team continues to grow in the roles we are asking. We have a lot of work to do, but we progressing in the right direction."
After 10 games, senior Caitlin Schafer leads the team and the Golden Coast Conference with 18 goals. She also leads the league with 22 total points, adding four assists, and ranks second in the GCC with 13 steals. Sophomore Hana Vilanova is third in the league with 14 goals while fellow sophomore Morgan Molloy adds 12, sitting fifth in the GCC.
In goal, junior Claire Wright allowed just 6.5 goals per game in the four games at the UCSD Triton Invitational last weekend and leads the league with 109 saves.
