Sept. 2, 2016 LOS ANGELES -- Behind goals from Sarkis Shaginian and Alvaro Madrigal, the LMU men's soccer team outlasted Florida Gulf Coast, 2-1, Friday night at Sullivan Field.
Shaginian delivered the opening goal just 11 minutes into action, while Alvaro Madrigal netted the game-winning goal in the 76th minute as the Lions notched their first win of the season.
In its first matchup against Florida Gulf Coast, LMU was outshot, 18-13, but a nine-save performance from Collin Partee and the backline fended off the Eagles attack all night.
LMU took advantage of its opportunities early on as Shaginian indebted the scoreboard first. Antonio Porreco found Matt Gooden streaking down the right flank, who corralled the ball just outside the box before firing a pass to Shaginian as he delivered a one-timer into the back left corner to give the Lions the upper hand just 11:41 into play.
The Lions had another chance to tack on another score in the opening half, but a penalty kick by Porreco was snatched by Florida Gulf Coast's Jared Brown to hold the game at 1-0.
The Eagles were able to delivered the equalizer at 75:27, keeping possession in the offensive third before Arion Sobers-Assue fired one into the back of the net.
However, the Lions responded just over a minute later as Alvaro Madrigal and Adian Perez outlasted a five-on-two situation to reclaim the lead.
Perez deked a trio of defenders before feeding Madrigal in between another pair. Madrigal took a touch before chipping a shot just over the hand of the outstretched goalkeeper to put the score back in favor of the Lions at 76:55.
The score would hold as LMU tabbed its first win of the season, 2-1.
