SAN FRANCISCO — LMU's comeback attempt fell short as San Francisco scored a late penalty kick to defeat the Lions 2-1 on Saturday afternoon at Negoesco Stadium.
San Francisco (9-4-1, 4-2-0 WCC) took an early lead when David Raphael scored in the 23rd minute, but LMU (5-5-5, 1-2-3) quickly responded with a wonderfully worked set piece.
Nathan Rodrigues launched a diagonal ball from near midfield all the way across to the back post, where
Hugo Tavares collected it and played it across the six-yard box for
Civan de Jesus Ferreira to tap home in the 24th minute, leveling the match at 1-1.
The score remained tied until the 87th minute when
Wawa Palga was shown a yellow card for a foul in the box. Raphael stepped up to convert the penalty kick, securing his second goal of the match and the victory for the Dons.
The LMU men's soccer team will return to action Saturday, Nov. 1, at Seattle U.
