LOS ANGELES - - LMU men's water polo redshirt junior Eric Hernandez has been awarded the Ben Carlson Memorial Scholarship, as announced at the 2nd annual Ben Carlson Scholarship dinner in June.
Hernandez was one of two finalists honored with the memorial scholarship, which recognizes standouts in the areas of academics, athletics, service to society, and for their spirit of independence.
Ben Carlson was a Newport Beach Lifeguard that died in the line of duty July 6, 2014. Ben exhibited an exceptional work ethic, love of the ocean, compassion, athleticism, and scholastic performance. The Ben Carlson Memorial and Scholarship Foundation offers two scholarships in Ben's memory.
The scholarship is awarded based on candidates attending a four-year post-secondary school within ten months of award application date; they are Undergraduate student on track for or high school senior transitioning to postsecondary education; the candidate demonstrates a strong work ethic, academic promise, athleticism, and service to community; the candidate mush have a minimum 3.5 GPA and on track for graduation from high school; Applicants with present or past participation in a junior lifeguard program or present or past employment as an ocean lifeguard are given additional preference.
