Men’s Water Polo Drops Conference Opener in Battle of #11 vs. #6

SAN JOSE, CALIF. – #11 LMU scored the first two goals of the game before #6 San Jose State pulled ahead and stayed in front in the West Coast Conference opener. The Spartans won the game, 16-13.
 
Roman Saroyan and Tommaso Baldineti scored the game's first two goals over the first three minutes of play. SJSU tied the game with two goals late in the period, including one that came with four seconds showing in the period.
 
San Jose State built up a 4-2 lead before Alika Naone converted a powerplay goal to cut LMU's deficit in half. The two sides traded off scoring the final seven goals of the half, with the Lions pulling back within one goal on three different occasions in the quarter. Jake Bonavia and Eduardo Carraresi each scored a goal down the stretch of the half, but a late Spartans goal made it 7-5 at intermission.
 
The home team increased their lead to five goals to start the third quarter. Abel Romero Corbalan and Baldineti scored the Lions to pull back within three. After San Jose State built their lead back up to five, Romero Corbalan ended the period with a 6-on-5 conversion to pull within four, 12-8, in the closing seconds of the third.
 
Alika Naone started the final period with a pair of goals less than a minute and half into the return to play. After the Spartans added one back, Baldineti scored his third of the day to pull the Lions within two with 4:25 to play. After San Jose State responded, Naone completed his final quarter hat trick with his third goal of the period at the 3:28 mark. The back and forth continued as SJSU added one and Romero Corbalan scored his third of the game with less than two minutes to play. The Spartans added one in the closing minute to secure the game.
 
Roberto Barrera Sanchez played all 32 minutes in the cage for the Lions and made eight saves.
 
LMU's time in San Jose State will continue Saturday with two more games in Northern California. The Lions will open the morning against non-conference opponents #16 UC Santa Barbara at 9:00 AM and against #8 UC Davis at 3:00 PM. Both games will feature live stats on the Fosh.
