June 10, 2016

Junior right-hander J.D. Busfield was selected in the seventh round of the 2016 Major League Baseball Draft on Friday, nabbed by the Tampa Bay Rays with the 210th overall pick.

Busfield, a 2016 honorable mention All-WCC selection, began the year as LMU's Friday starter, ultimately finishing the season with a 5-4 record and a 4.08 ERA over 13 starts and 88.1 innings of work. The native of Valencia, Calif. struck out 61 batters to just 10 walks. In WCC play, Busfield accumulated a 4-4 record over nine starts, which also included LMU's lone complete game. Busfield walked just nine batters over 63.2 innings pitched against conference foes.

Should Busfield choose to sign with Tampa Bay, he would finish his LMU career with the best walks-per-nine mark (1.80), fourth-most saves (14) and ninth-best ERA (3.83) in LMU history. A third team 2016 Louisville Slugger Preseason All-American according to Collegiate Baseball, Busfield set a new LMU record for saves in a season (14) during his sophomore year.

The 2016 MLB Draft continues on Saturday with rounds 11 through 40. Coverage on MLB.com begins at 9 a.m.
