Five Lauded by WCC, Caulfield First Team All-WCC

Junior Phil Caulfield highlighted LMU's All-West Coast Conference selections, earning first team All-WCC honors. Four other Lion baseball players were also lauded, with Cassidy Brown earning a spot on the second team, J.D. Busfield and Austin Miller claiming spots on the honorable mention squad, and Niko Decolati taking home All-Freshman team accolades.

After the first three-way tie for the regular season title in the modern era, five programs captured one of the five major WCC individual honors. Tri-champions BYU, Gonzaga and Saint Mary's claimed a combined nine spots on the 2016 All-WCC first team. Gonzaga junior infielder Jeff Bohling captured West Coast Conference Player of the Year honors, Pepperdine junior right-hander A.J. Puckett earned conference Pitcher of the Year accolades, while first-year star outfielder Keaton Kringlen collected the Freshman of the Year award for BYU. Junior shortstop Nico Giarratano of San Francisco captured Defensive Player of the Year honors. Saint Mary's Eric Valenzuela was selected by his peers as Coach of the Year. All five individual awards â€" along with the All-West Coast Conference First, Second and Freshman Teams â€" were voted on solely by the league's 10 head coaches.

Caulfield, who hit .309 for the year, caught fire in WCC play, hitting .379 with 17 runs scored, two doubles, two triples and 14 RBI in 25 games played against conference foes. The native of Burlingame, Calif. swiped four of his eight total stolen bases in WCC play, while also hitting safely in 11 of his final 12 WCC contests. Overall on the year, Caulfied appeared in 47 games (40 starts) and hit .309 to finish second on the team. Caulfield scored 27 runs, drew nine walks and six hit-by-pitches, and stole eight bases.

Brown, who is a semifinalist for the Gregg Olson Breakout Player of the Year Award, batted a team-best .325 with 29 runs scored, 17 doubles, a triple, six homers and 41 RBI. The team-leader in virtually every offensive category, he also accumulated 18 walks and stole four bases. Defensively, he threw out 32% of potential base stealers. He led the team with 23 multi-hit games this season, and managed multiple hits in 14 of his final 30. Brown belted half of his six homers in WCC play, posting 17 RBI against conference foes.

Busfield began the year as LMU's Friday starter, ultimately finishing the season with a 5-4 record and a 4.08 ERA over 13 starts and 88.1 innings of work. The native of Valencia, Calif. struck out 61 batters to just 10 walks. In WCC play, Busfield accumulated a 4-4 record over nine starts, which also included LMU's lone complete game. Busfield walked just nine batters over 63.2 innings pitched against conference foes.

Miller, a first team All-WCC selection as a freshman, and a second-teamer last year, hit .290 with 27 runs scored, four doubles, a triple, three homers and 21 RBI in his junior year. Picking up the pace in WCC play, the native of Greeley, Colo. hit .310 with 15 runs scored, three doubles, a homer and 15 RBI against conference foes. Miller led the Lions with 18 stolen bases in 22 attempts, with nine of the swipes coming in WCC play. Miller also managed to string together LMU's longest hit streak of the year, hitting safely in 15 straight from March 26 to May 1.

Decolati turned in a stellar freshman campaign, batting .306 with 20 runs scored, six doubles, two triples, four homers and 33 RBI over 47 games played and 40 starts. The native of Las Vegas, Nev. batted .293 with nine runs scored, four doubles, a homer and 11 RBI against conference foes.
