LMU fought the entire way on Senior Day Sunday from Page Stadium, but Gonzaga (30-15, 16-8 WCC) finally put the Lions (26-26, 13-14 WCC) away in 12 innings, earning a 9-7 victory on a two-RBI single in the top of the 12th from Patrick Chung.
The Lions trailed 6-1 after two innings, but scored four in the fifth and one in the bottom of the ninth to force extra innings -- just the second extra-inning affair of the year for LMU. The Lions once again staved off elimination in the 11th after Gonzaga plated a run in the top of the inning, but the two in the 12th proved to be too much for LMU.
With the victory, which came in four hours and seven minutes, Gonzaga earned a sweep over LMU.
LMU got on the board without the benefit of a hit in the bottom of the first, as Austin Miller drew a one-out walk, moved to third on an errant pickoff throw, and came in to score on a wild pitch. Hunter Wells, who got the start and took a no-decision, threw 38 total pitches in the home half of the first, issuing three walks and allowing a single, but limiting the damage to just the one run.
Gonzaga, which had not trailed in the series to that point, quickly punched back in a big way, scoring six runs on six hits, including a three-run homer from Jeffrey Bohling, to claim a 6-1 lead after an inning and a half. All six runs plated with two out, as Jace VanDeBrake had a two-RBI single, Bohling homered, and Tyler Frost singled home the final run of the frame.
After a pair of quiet innings on both sides, LMU exploded for a four-run fifth, cutting the deficit to one at 6-5 after five innings. Spencer Erdman, who batted 3-for-6 with two runs scored out of the ninth spot in the order, and Phil Caulfield got the inning going with singles before Miller punched an RBI-single into right-centerfield to plate the first run. A single from Cassidy Brown, who went 4-for-4 on the day, loaded the bases, setting the table for a pair of productive ground balls from Jamey Smart and Niko Decolati to drive home a pair of runs. Hitting with two out and Decolati at first, Seaver Whalen continued his torrid weekend, punching an RBI-double down the right field line to cap the scoring run.
Whalen, who went 3-for-5 with the double, finished the three-game series batting .667 (8x12) with a run scored, four doubles, a triple and an RBI.
LMU had an opportunity to draw even in the eighth after pinch hitter Kyle Dozier drew a one-out walk before giving way to pinch runner Billy Wilson. The speedy outfielder stole second and moved to third on a ground ball for the second out, but was stranded at third as reliever Wyatt Mills struck out Erdman to end the threat.
Working completely with two out, the Lions completed the comeback in the bottom of the ninth when Smart drove an RBI-double off the wall in left field to chase home Brown, who had kept the game alive with a single, his fourth hit of the day. After working the count full and putting Brown in motion on the pitch, Smart laced a pitch just out of the reach of left fielder Sam Brown to tie the game and send LMU to extra innings.
Gonzaga managed to take a 7-6 lead by way of a run in the top of the 11th when Sam Brown shot an RBI-single back up the middle with the bases loaded, but LMU once again clawed back even with a run of its own in the home half of the frame. Erdman got the inning going with his third hit of the day before a sacrifice bunt from Caulfield moved the tying run to second with one out. Walks to Miller and Brown loaded the bases, bringing freshman Steven Chavez to the dish with a chance to tie the game. Chavez offered at the first pitch of the at bat, grounding a ball to the backhand of the shortstop where Dustin Breshears dove and relayed a throw to second for the second out, but at the cost of the tying run crossing home. Decolati nearly ended the game for LMU on the ensuing play, driving a ball to centerfield, but it hung up for Frost who made the catch and sent the game to the 12th.
Justin Jacobs got the game-winning rally started for Gonzaga in the 12th, shooting a one-out single to second base before moving to second on a wild pitch. A walk followed to put runners at first and second before Jake Roberts grounded a ball to third where Decolati got the runner at second, leaving runners at the corners with two out. A stolen base put two men in scoring position, setting the table for Chung's clutch two-out two-RBI game-winning single into centerfield.
LMU will conclude the 2016 season on Tuesday when it hosts Long Beach State at 6 p.m.
