SAN DIEGO - Defense continued to shine for 22nd-ranked LMU women's water polo. But so did their offensive struggles, as they fell in a physical battle to 23rd-ranked California Baptist in the third place game at the 2016 Golden Coast Conference Championships Sunday afternoon.
The Lancers (23-11) defense came up big, forcing LMU (12-21) into 21 turnovers. CBU also held LMU to just 2-for-14 on the 6-on-5 attack. CBU was 2-for-10 but added a penalty shot goal. The Lancers finished with seven more shots than the Lions, going 7-for-31. LMU was 5-for-24.
LMU freshman goalie Sky Flores finished with her 15th game with at least 10 saves, totaling 13 as she wraps up a solid inaugural season in college water polo with 288 saves. Senior Bridgette Alvarez had two goals for the Lions.
The Lancers built a 5-1 lead at the 5:28 mark of the third quarter.
LMU attempted a late rally, getting goals from Caitlin Schafer and Ivana Castro to make it 5-3. The teams traded goals the rest of the way, including just one goal each in the final period.
