LMU broke a 1-1 tie in the sixth inning, with Cassidy Brown delivering a two-RBI triple to highlight the frame, as LMU (16-16, 7-5 WCC) backed a stellar start from junior Blake Redman en route to capturing a West Coast Conference series over San Francisco (10-24, 5-7 WCC) by way of a 5-1 victory on Saturday night from Page Stadium.

Brown finished the game 2-for-4 with the triple, a run scored and two RBI.

Redman, making his second weekend start of the year, dealt 8.0+ innings, allowing one run on seven hits and one walk with a career-best eight strikeouts to improve to 5-3 on the year. Over six starts this year, Redman now owns a 4-1 record with a 1.93 ERA over 37.1 innings.

The only Don hitter to really figure out Redman proved to be Allen Smoot, who went 3-for-4 with an RBI.

The two teams traded a run in the third inning, as San Francisco got on the board first on an RBI-single from Smoot. LMU wasted no time responding to draw back even as Seaver Whalen doubled to start the frame. Nico Decolati followed with a single to put runners on the corners with nobody out, but USF starter, James Kannenberg, did well to limit the damage, inducing a double play off the bat of Phil Caulfield that pushed home the run at the cost of two outs.

Both starters continued to pitch well into the sixth, but LMU got a rally going with a one-out infield single from Spencer Erdman. With Erdman running, Miller punched a single back up the middle to chase Erdman to third and bring Brown to the plate. The native of Hudson, Ohio lined a ball into centerfield that knuckled past the centerfielder Matt Sinatro and allowed both Erdman and Miller to scamper home. The Lions tacked on two more runs in the inning, including one on a wild pitch, to claim a 5-1 lead headed into the seventh.

Kannenberg was charged with all five LMU runs, allowing the tallies on seven hits and three walks over 6.0 innings. The loss dropped Kannenberg to 3-3 on the year.

Although Redman took the mound in the ninth, the right-hander allowed the first two men to reach, forcing LMU to call to its closer, Sean Watkins. Watkins induced a double play to relieve the pressure before Billy Wilson made a diving catch in left field to end the game and seal the victory. For his efforts, Watkins was credited with his fourth save of the year.

LMU will return to action on Tuesday when it travels to UCLA for a non-conference game at 6 p.m.
