Playing the first game of a doubleheader on Friday afternoon from LMU's Page Stadium, LMU (15-15, 6-4 WCC) scored seven runs in the first inning and never looked back en route to taking the opener, 13-4, over San Francisco (9-23, 4-6 WCC).
The Lion offense exploded for the 13 runs on 17 hits, including three-hit days from Austin Miller and Cassidy Brown. Miller scored a pair of runs and drove in two, while Brown had a run scored and one RBI. Phil Caulfield finished 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBI to extend his hitting streak to 10 games. Senior Ryan Erickson had another solid day at the plate, driving in three in LMU's seven-run first.
The Lions chased USF starter, Anthony Shew, after just 0.2 innings of work, tagging the right-hander with seven runs on seven hits and one walk. With the loss, Shew fell to 1-5 on the year.
LMU starter, J.D. Busfield, benefitted from the solid offensive outpouring, improving to 3-2 with the victory. The right-hander dealt 7.0 innings, allowing four runs, all coming in the second frame, on eight hits and one walk with three strikeouts.
Following the seven-run first, LMU tacked on single runs in the third and fourth innings before posting a three-run fifth. The Lions capped the scoring in the game in the seventh, plating a single run on a wild pitch to extend the lead to 13-4.
The three-run fifth was highlighted by RBI-singles from Miller, Caulfied and Brown.
LMU will look to sweep the doubleheader with game two scheduled for an 8 pm first pitch.
