LMU (13-15, 5-4 WCC) exploded for five runs in the top of the sixth en route to beating San Diego (16-14, 4-5 WCC), 8-5, to claim a road series victory in West Coast Conference play on Sunday afternoon from Fowler Park.
Tied at 3-3 headed into the sixth, LMU benefitted from an error charged to shortstop Bryson Brigman that allowed Spencer Erdman to reach. Cassidy Brown, who went 3-for-5, followed with a bunt single before Sean Watkins contributed the go-ahead RBI-single through the left side. Jamey Smart dropped a bunt single down the third base line on the ensuing play, where the throw to first sailed wide of the bag and down the line, allowing two more Lion runs to scamper home. A single from Jimmy Hill III pushed runners to the corners before Ted Boeke drew a hit-by-pitch to load the bags. Though USD would get the first out via a strikeout, reliever Sean Barry uncorked a wild pitch that allowed the fourth Lion run to come home before Austin Miller drove in the final tally with a fielder's choice ground ball to second.
San Diego managed to get on the board first in the game as Kevin Collard belted his fourth homer of the year, a three-run shot, in the second inning to make it 3-0 Toreros.
Collard would finish the game 3-for-4 with a double and two runs scored.
LMU chipped away at the deficit early in the game, scoring twice in the third and once more in the fifth to tie the game at three. A two-out double from Miller drove in the first Lion run with two out in the second before Erdman punched an RBI-single of his own up the middle to cut the deficit to 3-2.
The equalizer also came with two out in the fifth, as Billy Wilson reached on an infield single before stealing second base. The stolen base proved huge, as it put Wilson in scoring position for Phil Caulfield's clutch RBI-single to right field.
The run support proved enough for LMU starter Blake Redman, as the right-hander collected the victory and moved to 4-3, including 2-0 for the week. Redman tossed 5.0 innings, allowing three runs on four hits and three walks. Senior Michael Silva dealt the next 2.2 innings, allowing just one run on two hits and two walks before Watkins tossed the final 1.1 innings, allowing an unearned run in the ninth.
Left-hander Nick Sprengel was saddled with the loss on Sunday after allowing eight runs (five earned) on nine hits and one walk with three strikeouts. The decision dropped him to 2-5 on the year.
LMU will return to action on Tuesday when it plays host to UC Riverside at 6 p.m.
