Lions Drop Opener at Santa Clara, 9-1

Box Score April 29, 2016

Box Score

The LMU offense managed just one run on five hits, including just one hit over the first 6.2 innings, while Santa Clara chased LMU starter, Cory Abbott, after just 1.0+ inning as the Broncos (19-20, 6-10 WCC) defeated LMU (22-21, 10-9 WCC), 9-1, in game one of a three-game series being played at Stephen Schott Stadium.

Phil Caulfield singled to open the game, but LMU did not record its next hit until Billy Wilson shot a two-out single through the right side of the infield in the seventh. While they did not score in the seventh, LMU did manage a run in the eighth when Niko Decolati hit into a fielder's choice with the bases loaded to force in a run.

Santa Clara starter Steven Wilson was dominant on Friday night, tossing 7.0 shutout innings and allowing just three hits and two walks with eight strikeouts to move to 4-3 on the year.

While LMU struggled to figure out Wilson, Santa Clara solved Abbott early, tagging the righty for four runs on four hits and two walks over 1.0+ innings of work to drop him to 5-4 on the season. Abbott failed to get an out in the second inning, allowing all four of the runs in the frame. Tyler Cohen went the next 5.0 innings, surrendering just three runs on five hits and one walk with three strikeouts. Two of the three runs came on a pair of homers off the bat of Tyler Meditz. Meditz finished the game 2-for-2 with the homers, three runs scored, two walks and two RBI.

John Cresto also had a stellar day at the plate, finishing 2-for-4 with a pair of triples, two runs scored and two RBI. Cresto highlighted the four-run second with a two-RBI triple before Meditz' first homer made it 5-0 after three. His second homer plated the first of two runs in the sixth before Cresto tripled and came around to score on a RBI-single from Braden Frankfort.

After LMU pushed across its only run in the eighth, Santa Clara tacked on two more insurance runs in the home half of the inning to run the score to the eventual final of 9-1.

LMU will look to even the series tomorrow at 6 p.m.
