LOS ANGELES - The LMU softball team wrapped up a West Coast Conference series sweep of visiting Santa Clara, posting a second straight five-inning, 8-0 shutout of the Broncos Sunday afternoon at Smith Field.
The Lions improve to 28-19 overall and 6-3 in WCC play while Santa Clara falls to 7-35 overall and 2-4 in the WCC.
Rachael Farrington picked up the shutout win in the circle for LMU, moving to 13-7 on the year. She held the Broncos in check throughout, scattering four hits while walking one and striking out one.
In deja vu fashion to Saturday's nightcap, the bats got going in the bottom of the third and the Lions plated six runs in the inning for the second straight game.
Sterling Shuster began the run by scoring on a throwing error after leading off the inning with a walk. Stephanie Maciel collected an RBI-double to make it 2-0, and give the Lions their 95th double of the season, tying the all-time single-season record.
Alicia Brown drew a bases loaded walk for a third LMU run and Amanda Dirks delivered a two-RBI single through the left side to make it 5-0. Alex Finie capped the scoring with an RBI-double to left-center field, accounting for a sixth run on the day and a program record 96th double on the year.
The previous single-season record of 95 doubles was set in 65 games during the 2007 season. The 2016 Lions now have 96 through 47 games, and six regular-season games to go.
Meghan von Behren tallied her ninth homer of the year to lead of the fourth inning and give LMU a 7-0 pad. Santa Clara attempted a rally in the top of the fifth, loading the bases on a hit-by-pitch, single and walk, but Farrington worked out of the jam by getting the final out on a fly ball to left field.
In the bottom of the fifth, LMU advanced runners to second and third with one out and Hannah Montalban at the plate. The junior knocked a ground ball to the second baseman, who fumbled the ball, allowing the eighth and final run to score, ending the game due to the NCAA mercy rule.
Six different Lions tallied at least one hit led by von Behren's 2-for-3 performance.
LMU returns to WCC play on Saturday, April 30, beginning a three-game series at Saint Mary's.
