Junior right-hander Will Lydon tossed a complete game, allowing just one Lion run on seven hits, and the Pacific offense exploded for three homers, including two from Gio Brusa, as the Tigers (17-18, 8-8 WCC) beat the Lions (18-20, 8-8 WCC) by a score of 7-1 in game one of a three-game West Coast Conference series on Friday from Klein Family Field in Stockton, Calif.
Lydon, who has now tossed consecutive complete games after shutting out Portland last week, retired 16 straight hitters from the end of the second through the seventh, and also benefitted from three double plays. The final twin-killing came off the bat of Jamey Smart in the ninth to end the game. With a 0-for-4, Smart had a string of 34 straight games reached safely snapped.
LMU's lone offensive highlight came from Cassidy Brown, who went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI to collect his 19th multi-hit game of the year. Brown broke up the shutout bid in the ninth with a single to bring home Spencer Erdman.
In addition to Brusa's two solo homers, Danny Mayer also homered, sending a two-run shot out to left field. LMU starter, J.D. Busfield, was tagged with the three homers, ultimately allowing seven runs on 10 hits with four strikeouts over 6.1 innings.
While the three homers proved to be the highlights of the game, Nate Verlin finished 3-for-4 with two RBI hitting out of the second spot in the order for the Tigers.
LMU will look to even the series tomorrow at 7 pm when they hand the ball to sophomore Cory Abbott.
