April 2, 2016

Box Score

Carrying the highest ranking in LMU history, the #68 men's tennis team (8-6, 1-2 WCC) traveled to Pacific on Friday afternoon and posted a 4-3 victory over the #72 Tigers (11-9, 3-1 WCC).

The Lions found themselves in a battle early, winning a hard-fought doubles points with victories on courts two and three. Luke Bohuslav and Lukas Moenter defeated Miguel Diaz and Lance Ngo, 6-3, but #62 Sem Verbeek and Jose Chamba of Pacific drew the Tigers even with a 6-3 victory over Joat Farah and Errol Smith on the top court. With the point hinging on court two's decision, Charles Boyce and Cristobal Rivera outlasted Daniel Alameh and Alex Giannini, 6-4, to take a 1-0 lead in the match score.

That doubles point proved crucial as the two teams split the six singles courts, leaving LMU with the 4-3 victory. After dropping the first set to Verbeek, 6-2, Boyce retired at court one, evening the match score at 1-1. Smith, playing at #3 singles, responded with a victory over Chamba, 7-5, 6-4, but Diaz managed a tough feat for Pacific, defeating Farah at #4 singles, 7-6 (7), 6-1, to once again even the match score at 2-2. Farah had won eight of his previous 10 matches coming into Friday's contest.

The Tigers actually pulled ahead and came within a point of defeating the Lions with a 6-3, 1-6, 6-4 victory from Kumara Adavelly over Moenter on court six, but Bohuslav kept the Lions alive with a nail-biting 4-6, 7-6 (5), 7-6 (3) come-from-behind victory over Giannini on court five to focus all the attention on court two.

Playing for the match, Rivera was matched up against Alameh, and the two had split the first two sets. Rivera had won the first, 7-5, but dropped the second, 6-3. The senior leader for the Lions once again answered the bell, taking down his opponent, 6-2, in the third to ensure a Lion victory. The victory was Rivera's third straight, and he is now 3-0 in WCC play.

LMU will now play at Saint Mary's at Noon on Saturday.
