A week after tossing 7.0 shutout innings at UC Irvine, junior right-hander Blake Redman returned to the mound and threw a career-best 8.0 shutout frames at USC, guiding LMU (11-14) to an 8-0 victory over USC (11-12) on Tuesday night from Dedeaux Field.
The shutout victory was the second of the year for LMU, with the first coming in the finale against Portland on March 20.
Redman surrendered just five hits and struck out a career-high tying seven hitters, throwing 116 total pitches in the outing. Senior Michael Silva finished off the shutout with a scoreless ninth, benefitting from a game-ending double play when Billy Wilson threw out Corey Dempster at the plate trying to tag up from third base on a shallow fly ball to left field.
Redman's biggest jam came in the first inning when he allowed a pair of two-out hits, including a double to Timmy Robinson to put runners at second and third. Junior catcher Cassidy Brown helped his batterymate escape the jam, picking Jeremy Martinez off of third to end the frame.
LMU's offense supported the stellar outing, collecting eight runs on 11 hits. Brown led the way for the Lions offensively, finishing 2-for-5 with four RBI and his fourth homer of the year. Spencer Erdman also collected multiple hits, going 3-for-4 with a run scored.
LMU did the bulk of its damage against USC starter, CJ Stubbs. Stubbs lasted just 3.0 innings, allowing five runs on six hits, including allowing three runs in the second. Sean Watkins had an RBI-triple in the three-run second before LMU tacked on two more in the third, highlighted by Brown's two-run homer, to extend the lead to 5-0.
With Redman cruising through the middle innings, LMU managed to push three more runs across in the seventh. Brown once again provided the big blow in the inning, punching a two-RBI single into right field to run the tally to 7-0. Steven Chavez capped the scoring run on the ensuing play, contributing a run-scoring ground ball to bring home Jimmy Hill III.
Redman finished his outing strong, recording three of his seven strikeouts over his final 2.0 innings of work.
LMU will return to West Coast Conference play on Friday at 6 p.m. when it opens a three-game series at San Diego.
