LOS ANGELES - Behind quality pitching performances from Rachael Farrington and Hannah Bandimere, and big home run hitting from a quartet of Lions, the LMU softball team improved to 11-2 on Smith Field with a 4-0, 9-1 doubleheader sweep of Cal Poly Tuesday afternoon.
In the opener, Farrington (11-5) pitched her second shutout of the season in her ninth complete game. The junior lefty did not record a walk or a strikeout, but allowed just four hits in seven innings. The Mustangs (16-11) got a runner as far as third base twice, but on each occasion, Farrington and her defense clamped down to preserve the shutout.
At the plate, Alex Finie went 2-for-3, including a solo home run that got the Lions on the board in the third. Meghan von Behren also scored in the inning, courtesy a Stephanie Maciel RBI-single, to put LMU on top 2-0.
The Lions (20-12) added tow more runs in the fifth on an Alicia Brown two-run shot. Brown, Maciel and Shianne Ybarra all joined Finie with two hits apiece.
In the nightcap, Bandimere (10-6) set the tone with a three-up, three-down top of the first for Cal Poly. The Lions' offense then got rolling quickly as von Behren led off the inning with a solo home run. Amanda Dirks would knock in a run with a single up the middle and Aria Pogni drew a bases loaded walk to give LMU a 3-0 lead.
The scoring continued in the second inning as von Behren led off with a single, stole second and scored on a Stephanie Crist single to right-center field. Maciel would later score on a sacrifice fly by Ybarra to make it 5-0 LMU.
Crist completed the Lion scoring in the third, smacking a grand slam over the center field fence.
Bandimere gave up a solo home run to Cal Poly leadoff Stephanie Heyward in the top of the third, but the Mustangs would never rally for more as the game was called due to the eight-run mercy rule in the fifth inning.
Bandoleer finished with six strikeouts in five innings of work. She also walked one and scattered five hits.
LMU finished with 13 hits, including three by von Behren and two each from Crist, Brown, Dirks and Sterling Shuster.
The Lions conclude their four-game homestand Wednesday, hosting Grand Canyon in a doubleheader beginning at noon.
