FRESNO, Calif. - The 15th-ranked LMU women's water polo team opened play within the Golden Coast Conference with a road win, traveling to Fresno Pacific and earning a 15-8 victory on Friday night.
The Lions, who have won the first two GCC Tournament Championships, began they pursuit of a third with a win on the road to start this season's seven-game conference schedule. The Lions used a nine-goal run in the second and third quarters to put the game away.
LMU improves to 7-12 overall and 1-0 in the GCC, while Fresno Pacific falls to 7-8 overall and 0-1 in conference.
Freshman Hana Vilanova led the Lions with four goals while Erin Byrne added three. Emily Byrne, Bridgette Alvarez and Caitlin Schafer had two each. Emily Marr and Nia Apodaca had two each to lead the Sunbirds.
The Lions trailed 1-0 and then 2-1 before taking a 4-2 lead on a goal from Katie Hungerford. The teams traded goals to end the first and start the second quarter and the Lions led 6-4 after Marr scored with 6:05 to play in the first half.
LMU would then rattle off nine straight goals, the first coming from the freshman Emily Byrne at the 5:43 mark of the second quarter. Her sister, senior Erin Byrne would finish the run to make it 15-4 with 2:45 to play in the third quarter.
The Lions return home to finally play their first home games, hosting the 2016 ZUMO LMU Invitational Mar. 18-19. The Lions will face Harvard (11:30 am) and San Jose State (3:15 pm) on Friday and will then host Princeton (10:30 am) on Saturday. Tickets for the tournament benefit the water polo team's Lions Athletic Fund.
