LOS ANGELES - LMU Softball opened a nine-game homestand with a thrilling doubleheader sweep of Boston University Thursday afternoon at Smith Field. Amanda Dirks had a pair of big home runs, including a game-winning hit, and Shianne Ybarra provided walk-off heroics in game two as the Lions earned 3-1 and 6-5 victories over the Terriers.
In game one, LMU (13-6) broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the fourth on a Sterling Shuster RBI-double. Ybarra led off the inning with a single to left before giving way to pinch runner Shannon Kent. Kent would steal second to move into scoring position and then score easily on Shuster's double to the left-center field wall.
BU (4-11) tied the game in the top of the sixth with one run on three hits. But Ybarra started the rally again in the sixth as the Lions tacked on two more runs courtesy Dirks' first homer of the day. The sophomore transfer reached on a double to left field and would score two batters later as Dirks sent a shot sailing over the left field fence.
Rachael Farrington closed out the top of the seventh for the complete game victory.
The Lions jumped on second-game starter Sydni Overly, scoring four runs in the bottom of the first inning. Alicia Brown knocked in leadoff hitter Meghan von Behren for the first run, followed by a three-run homer by Dirks.
Things looked under control for LMU until late in the game. The Terriers rallied for three runs in the fifth and, after LMU added a fifth run in the sixth, posted two more in the top of the seventh, knotting the game at 5-5.
But it would be Ybarra who would come through with the final heroics, launching a one-out, first pitch over the right-center field fence to give LMU the 6-5 victory.
Farrington (7-3), picked up her seventh win of the season in the nightcap, tossing the final inning of relief. Hannah Bandimere went 4.2 innings, striking out one and scattering seven hits for three runs. Andy Wellins also pitched 1.1 innings of relief.
The Lions, who entered the day leading the nation in double per game, had a combined five doubles in the two games. Dirks went a combined 5-for-6 on the day while Ybarra had a combined four hits.
LMU continues play at home on Friday, facing Monmouth at noon as part of the LMU Softball Tournament.
