SAN BRUNO, Calif. - Three Lions were honored by the West Coast Conference Wednesday as the league released its 2016 Softball Preseason Poll and All-WCC Preseason Softball Team.
Alicia Brown, Amanda Dirks and Rachael Farrington were named to the All-WCC Preseason Team, which features 11 position players and three pitchers. Meanwhile, the Lions squad, under the direction of first-year Head Coach Sami Strinz-Ward, was picked to finish third by a vote of the league's six head coaches.
Reigning champion BYU received the maximum five first-place votes and 25 total points. Pacific received one first-place vote and 19 points, followed by LMU with 17 points. San Diego (14 points), Saint Mary's (10 points) and Santa Clara (5 points) round out the preseason voting.
All three individually honored Lions are returning All-WCC selections from one year ago. Brown, a sophomore third baseman, and Farrington, a junior right-handed pitcher, were first team honorees in 2015 while Dirks, a junior outfielder, was a second team pick.
The trio remain key components in the Lion lineup this spring as a much more experienced squad takes to the field. After closing out last year's 26-28 campaign without a senior listed on the active roster, the 2016 Lions feature seven seniors and four juniors on the 24-member roster.
The Lions open the 2016 season at the Grand Canyon University Kickoff Tournament Feb. 12-14. Their first home games are scheduled for Mar. 1 against Saint Peter's.
