Box Score Feb. 26, 2016 Box Score
Sophomore Sean Watkins went 4-for-5 with a run scored, a double and two RBI, while junior Ted Boeke belted his second homer in as many games as part of a 2-for-4 night that included four RBI as LMU (2-3) routed San Jose State (2-4), 13-4, in the opening game of a three-game series being played at Municipal Stadium in San Jose, Calif. over the weekend.
Boeke's home run, a three-run shot, capped an eight-run third inning for LMU that featured six hits and saw 11 batters come to the plate. The four RBI were a new career high for Boeke, doubling-up his previous career best of two. Watkins, who set a career high of his own in hits, doubled in a run in the eight-run third before singling in the sixth, eighth and ninth â€" with his final hit driving in one of our runs in the top of the ninth. The native of Pacifica, Calif. then took to the hill and finished the game on the mound for LMU with a 1-2-3 final frame.
Also highlighting the offensive output were juniors Seaver Whalen and Cassidy Brown. Whalen went 3-for-5 with three runs scored, a double, two RBI and a stolen base, while Brown was 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles, two runs scored and two RBI. Every starter for the Lions reached base at least once, as LMU drew five walks and two hit by pitches.
Junior J.D. Busfield got the start and earned the victory, allowing four runs on seven hits with five strikeouts over 6.0 innings. The right-hander surrendered all four runs in the fourth inning, as San Jose State posted the four on five hits, including a two-RBI triple from Brett Bautista. Bautista finished the game 2-for-4.
Redshirt-sophomore Harrison Simon dealt the next 2.0 innings scoreless before Watkins set down the seven, eight and nine hitters without incident in the ninth.
Outside of the eight-run third, Spartan starter Josh Nashed avoided real trouble, allowing the eight runs on eight hits and three walks with five strikeouts over 6.0 innings. Like Busfield, the loss was his first decision of the season.
LMU will look to earn a series victory tomorrow when Cory Abbott takes the mound against righty Logan Handzlik at 2 p.m. PT.
