ORINDA, Calif. - Five Lion women were among the top 10 finishers in their heat of the 3,000m run on Sunday while Brandon Vientos had the second fastest time overall on the men's side as the LMU men's and women's track teams got their 2016 season underway at the West Coast Quadrangular and West Coast Relays at Miramonte High School in Orinda, Calif.
Serving primarily as an exhibition meet to ease into the season, the Lions competed against fellow West Coast Conference members Saint Mary's, Santa Clara and San Francisco in a 3,000m, 200m, 100m and distance medley relay.
Danielle Shanahan won the first heat of the women's 3k in 9:35.1. Kayla de Bondt finished third in 9:44.4, Kelli Capel was seventh in 10:04.5, Samantha Garcia was ninth in 10:08.3 and Maddi Vorgitch was 10th in 10:11.8.
On the men's side, Vientos placed second in 8:37.9 and Lance Capel was sixth overall in 8:46.4. Christopher Fredlund placed eighth in his heat and ninth overall with a time of 8:47.9. LMU's top freshmen finishers were Koby Pederson in 8:48.1 and Alex Sasser in 8:55.0.
The LMU women's DMR `A' team finished a close second to USF (11:49). The Lion quartet composed of Kelli Capel (1,200m), Chloe Curtis (400m), de Bondt (800m) and Shanahan (1,600m) finished the relay in 11:51. Shanahan anchored the race with a 4:54 mile shortly after her win in the 3k.
The Lion men's `A' squad placed fourth in the DMR in 10:27.2. Pederson led with the 1,200m, followed by Ryan Vargas running the 400m, Fredlund running the 800m and Vientos anchoring with the mile run.
The Lions are back on the track for their first full-fledged meet of the year, Saturday, March 5 at the Cal State LA Invitational.
