Freshman right-hander Luken Baker not only pitched the first 6.0 shutout innings of a 5-0 TCU victory over LMU, but he also provided a two-run homer in the fifth to help his own cause in collecting his first career victory on Sunday from Lupton Stadium in Fort Worth, Texas. With the victory, #11 TCU (2-1) earned a series victory over the Lions (1-2).
Baker allowed just one hit, a walk and two hit-batters over his 6.0 scoreless innings, eventually turning the ball over to Ryan Burnett in the seventh with a man on. Burnett proceeded to hit the only batter he faced before Preston Guillory entered and allowed the first of two Cassidy Brown singles on the night. Brown's single in the seventh loaded the bases with nobody out, but Guillory worked out of the jam with a pair of strikeouts and a pop fly to second base to keep the shutout bid in order and spoil LMU's only real threat of the game.
LMU junior Tyler Cohen made his second career start, and his first of the season, tossing 4.0 innings and allowing just one run on five hits and two walks while striking out three, but was ultimately tagged with the loss. Freshman Steven Skolarz, making his collegiate debut, allowed the round-tripper to Baker in the fifth, finishing the game having thrown 1.2 innings. Harrison Simon, who threw an inning of scoreless relief on Saturday night, contributed the next 1.2 innings, giving up a two-RBI single to Mason Hesse in the bottom of the ninth to extend a 3-0 TCU lead to the eventual final of 5-0.
The Lions managed just three total hits on the afternoon, including two from Brown who was hitless through the first two games. Spencer Erdman was the only other Lion to register a hit, breaking up the no-hit bid in the fourth with a one-out double -- his second in as many games.
Elliott Barzilli continued to swing a hot bat for TCU, going 3-for-4 with a run scored and a double to raise his early average to above .600.
LMU, which has suffered back-to-back shutout losses for the first time since February 9-10, 1985, will return to action on Tuesday when it hosts #16 USC at 6 pm from Page Stadium.
