LOS ANGELES - It has become a common script the last half decade in the series between LMU and San Francisco. Anything can happen. No lead is safe. And it will go to the last possession.
It was another thriller for the West Coast Conference Game of the Week as the Lions (12-16, 5-12) got three points on each of their first three possessions to start overtime, pushing them to a 100-87 win over the Dons (15-12, 8-8) on Saturday afternoon at Gersten Pavilion.
"Great competitive spirit, great crowd. The rivalry between LMU and USF is for real," said Head Coach Mike Dunlap. "It was great to get a sweep against them. "
All the pieces to the script where there for another classic. The Lions built a lead as large as 18 only to see Dont'e Reynolds hit an offensive putback -just his second field goal of the game - with three seconds left to send it to overtime.
This is the 10th time in the last 14 meetings the Lions and Dons have gone down to the final minute and the eighth to come down to the final possession or go to overtime.
"We found a way to win when a lot of teams would have been down in that situation. Our team was loose and played as if they had nothing to lose," said Dunlap. "We have been playing 10-11 guys in every game all season, so all of the guys have been in this situation. It is a tribute to this team to find a way."
The Lions started overtime with a three-point play by Marin Mornar, a three-pointer by Steven Haney and then a three-pointer by Mornar. The Lions outscored the Dons 18-5 in the extra frame to finish with 100 points against a WCC opponent for the first time since Jan. 29, 1999 in a 101-87 win over Saint Mary's.
The Lions had five players in double figures including 25 points from Haney. Brandon Brown had his second straight double-double with 17 points and 10 assists and Petr Herman had his first career double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Mornar added 19 points and Shamar Johnson had 10.
Tim Derksen led the Dons with a double-double, scoring 27 points with 11 rebounds.
The Lions will wrap-up the regular season when they host Pepperdine for the Wells Fargo PCH Cup on Saturday, Feb. 27 at 1 pm. That game will also be the WCC Game of the Week.
