STOCKTON, Calif. - Down eight with a little over four minutes to play, LMU men's basketball would close the game on a 14-1 run, holding Pacific without a field goal the final 4:10 to earn a 77-72 win in West Coast Conference action at the Alex G. Spanos Center on Thursday afternoon.
Steven Haney Jr. hit back-to-back three-pointers during the final run to lift the Lions (11-14, 4-10), giving the road team a win in the series for the 10th straight game. The Lions finished 12-for-19 from three (63.2 percent) and turned the ball over just seven times. They finished shooting 48 percent from the field while Pacific (7-16, 5-8), who was shooting 61 percent in the second half to build an eight-point lead, missed their last five shots and finished shooting 49 percent for the game.
"Turnovers were a key. To only turn the ball over seven times on the road, you are going to have a chance to win," said Head Coach Mike Dunlap. "The three ball was also huge. Our ability to hit the three-pointer opened everything up for us. Steve Haney's three-pointers - one from the corner and the other from the top of the key - were difference makers."
Haney finished with 12 points, hitting 4-for-5 from three. Joshua Spiers led the Lions with 17 points, hitting 5-for-7 from the field, 3-for-5 from three and 4-for-5 from the free throw line. He also had five rebounds and three assists. Marin Mornar added 13 points, hitting a trio of three-pointers and Adom Jacko added 11 points. Eric Thompson, who did not play in first meeting against the Lions, led Pacific with 19 points and eight rebounds.
Alex Kobre gave Pacific a 71-63 lead with 4:10 to play on a three-pointer. The Lions, who led 41-36 at the half and had just nine field goals to that point, cut the lead to five on a free throw from David Humphries and a lay-in by Munis Tutu.
Haney then hit his back-to-back three-pointers after back-to-back defensive stops to give the Lions a 72-71 lead with 2:08 to play. Neither team would tally a field goal the rest of the way and the Lions hit 5-of-6 free throws to ice the win.
The Lions will play their final road game of the regular season when they face Saint Mary's on Saturday at 8 pm.
