SANTA CLARA, Calif. - In it's final road contest of the season, the LMU men's soccer team nabbed scores in each half to cruise past Santa Clara, 2-0, Sunday afternoon at Stevens Stadium.
Connor Johnson and Lucky Puengrod scored a goal apiece, while Dante Pezzi recorded a three-save effort en route to recording a shutout in his first career start in net. With the victory, LMU (9-8-0, 3-3-0 WCC) recorded its second straight season with at least five road victories.
"It was a very good win on the road against a good program," said head coach Paul Krumpe. "It's always tough to win on the road in the WCC. We're hoping to get to 10 wins this year and still have a chance to get there. Our seniors got an away win on their final road game and our freshmen played very well."
Seeking its first win at Santa Clara (5-9-1, 0-5-1 WCC) since 2013, Johnson struck with a diving header in the 13th minute, beating the keeper off a set-piece feed from Alvaro Madrigal. LMU held the Broncos to just two shots in the first half as it carried a 1-0 advantage into the break.
The Lions struck early to open the second stanza as Puengrod registered his third score of the season in the 57th minute, carrying the ball through the Bronco defense before sending in into the far post to further LMU's command to 2-0. Pezzi and the Lion defense fended off 10 shots by the Broncos in the second frame to earn thier second straight shutout.
LMU will return to action Saturday night at Sullivan Field in its final game of the season on senior night against San Francisco. Match time is set for 7 p.m.
