Contreras, Wright Power Lions Past Redhawks

Box Score
LOS ANGELES — LMU (2-8-2, 1-4-0) defeated Seattle U (4-5-3, 1-1-2) 2-0 on Saturday night at Sullivan Field. The Lions preserved the shutout through a late stretch from 77:51 to 87:40 in which Seattle U had five attacking actions but did not score.

The Lions finished with a season-high 15 shots to Seattle U's 12, and both teams put five attempts on goal, but the Lions converted through Felix Contreras and Skyler Wright. Ky Mani Dade recorded five saves as the Lions posted the shutout, while Seattle U finished with 16 fouls and two yellow cards compared with 12 fouls and one yellow for the Lions.

The Lions struck twice in a little more than two minutes, with Felix Contreras opening the scoring at 11:49 off assists from Axel Uriostegui and Matthew Sacristan before Skyler Wright made it 2-0 at 13:51 from Ismail Nieves. It was the first goal of the season for both Contreras and Wright.

The first goal was nodded in by Contreras but was set up beautifully by a nice little set piece. Uriostegui played a short corner to Sacristan who hesitated for a second then slid it back to Uriostegui running toward the endline. Uriostegui played a nicely weighted cross into the near post and Contreras sprinted through to head it home.

Moments later it was Wright netting his first goal as a Lion. Ismail Nieves played a long ball off of a defensive zone free kick and it took a nice bounce over the Seattle U center back. Wright powered through and got onto the end of it before chipping home deftly over the goalkeeper.

Earlier, Dade helped the Lions through Seattle U's early pressure, saving Brayden Smith's shot after a corner before Leonardo Flores missed high, and the Lions answered with attempts from Fritz Engel and Sacristan. After the two goals, the Lions continued to create set-piece chances with corner kicks in the 33rd and 36th minutes, while Sacristan added another shot in the 42nd. The half grew more physical late, and Dade made another save on Nico Wiskel in the final minute as the Lions went into halftime with a 2-0 advantage.

The Lions protected their 2-0 lead throughout a scoreless second half, with Dade making three saves after the break to help finish off a 2-0 win over Seattle U. Earlier, Lewis Clutton put a shot on goal in the 50th minute, and the Lions continued to press through a physical stretch that included multiple fouls and yellow cards for both sides.

Nacho Macias, Anthony Boyadjian and Uriostegui added attempts before the final 20 minutes, while Dade turned away a Seattle U shot in the 72nd minute. The Lions generated a late attacking push with five shots from the 80th through 87th minutes, including a saved effort by Boyadjian and corner kicks in the 81st and 83rd minutes.

Seattle U also created late looks, but Dade saved shots in the 79th and 85th minutes as the Lions closed out the shutout.

Up next, the Lions travel to Moraga, California, to face Saint Mary's on Sunday, Oct. 25, at 1 p.m.
