RIVERSIDE, Calif. - With a mix of returning experience and talented newcomers, the LMU women's water polo team had a chance to get a look at a little of everyone as the entire roster contributed to a pair of wins to open the 2016 season on Saturday.
The Lions earned a 17-5 win over Concordia to start the day and then followed with a 20-2 win over Redlands in the California Baptist Mini Tournament at Lancer Aquatic Center in Riverside, Calif. The Lions open the season 2-0.
Junior Caitlin Schafer and senior Ivana Castro scored five goals each in the two games while freshman Hana Vilanova added four goals. Freshman Sky Flores started both games in goal for the Lions and had eight saves.
Sophomore Kiana Harpstrite, senior Kingsley Hill and senior Erin Byrned added three goals, while senior Bridgette Alvarez, freshman Katie Hungerford and sophomore Sage Pfeiffer had two each.
Up next for the Lions are four games against the nationally ranked as they head to the Stanford Invitational. On Saturday, Feb. 6 they will open with 8th-ranked San Jose State at 12:15 pm followed by 7th-ranked Michigan at 4:30 pm. Then on Sunday they will play top-ranked Stanford at 8 am before closing the tournament in game to determine final finish at the pool play tournament.
