LOS ANGELES - A fast start wasn't enough to overcome a tough night from the field as LMU fell to BYU in the teams' second meeting in a week, 88-62, at the Marriott Center Thursday night in West Coast Conference action.
The Lions jumped out to an 8-0 lead, hit all four of their field goal attempts to start the game and forced a BYU timeout. From there, the Lions went just 6-of-26 from the field the rest of the first half and BYU (15-7, 6-3) took control, outscoring the Lions (10-11, 3-7) 38-16 the rest of the half.
"We shot poorly tonight," said Head Coach Mike Dunlap. "We had good looks, but we just couldn't hit out shot. Then we went into a desert and it hurt our defense. I was disappointed in our defensive effort tonight."
The Lions finished shooting just 32.8 percent from the field (21-for-64) and just 2-for-22 from three (9.1 percent). BYU shot 50.6 percent from the field (50.8 percent), hitting 8-for-24 from three (33.3 percent).
Junior Adom Jacko continued his hot play, leading the Lions with 20 points and seven rebounds, going 9-for-16 from the field. In two games against BYU, the junior went 20-for-28 (71.4 percent) from the field with 46 points. Marin Mornar added 12 and Brandon Brown had 10.
BYU had five players in double figures and was led by Kyle Davis with 19 points and Chase Fischer with 17.
Shooting woes plagued the Lions in the last three halves of play against BYU. Since the Lions hit 9-for-13 from three in scoring 50 first half points in their meeting a week ago, they went just 4-for-31 since (12.9 percent).
The Lions road trip continues with San Diego on Saturday, Jan. 30 at 1 pm. It is the WCC Game of the Week and can be seen on Time Warner Cable SportsNet and on KXLU 88.9 FM.
