Post Meet Interviews: Jack Polerecky | Kayla de Bondt | Emily Hubert
BREA, Calif. - Sophomore Jack Polerecky and junior Kayla de Bondt each claimed individual titles to the the LMU men's and women's cross country teams at the 2015 Mark Covert Classic Sunday morning at Carbon Canyon Regional Park.
Polerecky was among the lead pack in the men's field for nearly the entire 8k and pulled away down the stretch, finishing in 25:13.15. The underclassmen heavy men's squad scored three in the top 10 as freshman Koby Pederson played seventh (25:35.52) and sophomore Harry Loasby was eighth (25:39.03).
Sophomore Christopher Fredlund placed 11th in 25:42.57 and freshman Branden Estrada was 13th in 25:45.66. The Lions' top five totaled 32 team points for a first-place team finish, an honor LMU last claimed in 2013.
On the women's side, de Bondt and senior Kelli Capel took first place and third place respectively, leading the Lions to a second place team finish behind San Diego State. de Bondt took the overall spot in the 5k race in 17:48.79, giving the Lions their fourth straight individual title at the season-opening meet. Sugimoto was third in 18:17.34.
The Lions went on to finish 11th through 14th, as well as 16th and 17th. Freshman Maddi Vorgitch led that pack with her 18:49.78, 11th place finish. Senior Chloe Curtis was 12th in 18:54.28, freshman Emily Hubert was 13th in 18:55.07 and senior Samantha Garcia was 14th in 18:56.36.
LMU takes a two-week break from competition, returning to action on Saturday, Sept. 19 at the Mustang Challenge Collegiate Invitational in Santa Clarita, Calif.
