Perez Wins West End Tennis Tournament

Aug. 17, 2015

Competing at the West End Tennis Tournament during the first week of August, junior LMU women's tennis player Jessica Perez topped a handful of stellar amateur players en route to winning the tournament.

Perez, who took home second team All-West Coast Conference honors as a sophomore last year, began the tournament by defeating Roberta Calvi (Genoa, Italy) in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3. With the victory, Perez advanced to play the #3 seed in the tournament, Tami Nguyen. Nguyen competed as San Diego State's #2 singles player last year, but Perez dispatched the Aztec star, 6-4, 6-2 to reach the semi-finals.

Playing against the top-seed in the tournament, Yongyuan Wang (Lakewood, Calif.), Perez battled to a 7-5, 6-2 victory to play in the final against Jiaqi Yang. Yang, the #2 overall seed in the tournament, was no match for Perez, who rolled to a 6-1, 6-0 victory to claim the tournament.

Playing exclusively at #1 singles for LMU last year, Perez went 13-16 overall, including 9-14 in dual play. The highlight of her season came against WCC-rival Pepperdine when she defeated then-#9 Lorraine Guillermo, who went on to be named WCC Player of the Year.

LMU women's tennis is gearing up to play its first season under new head coach Agustin Moreno, who is just the second head coach in program history.
