June 9, 2015 The LMU baseball program had quite the run on Tuesday as part of the second day of the 2015 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft, with a Lion player being selected in the sixth, seventh and eighth rounds. Sophomore shortstop David Fletcher (6th round - 195 overall | Los Angeles Angels), junior right-hander Trevor Megill (7th round - 207 overall | San Diego Padres) and senior righty Colin Welmon (8th round - 227 overall | Colorado Rockies) all were drafted.
This year marks the first since 2005 that LMU has had three players selected in the top-10 rounds. Stephen Kahn (5th round | Seattle), Jeff Stevens (6th round | Cincinnati) and James Cooper (9th round | New York - AL) were taken in that draft.
Fletcher, a first team All-West Coast Conference selection, batted .308 with 14 doubles, two triples, two homers and 27 RBI while playing stellar defense at shortstop. The athletic standout from Cypress, Calif., who was listed on the Brooks Wallace Award Watch List, stole 14 bases in 17 attempts. If Fletcher signs with the Angels, it would conclude a stellar two-year career in which he hit .318 with 69 runs scored and 31 stolen bases while starting every game for the Lions at shortstop. A 2014 Freshman All-American, Fletcher hit safely in 71 of his last 87 games overall. He also reached in 40 of his last 44 games, 65 of his last 70, and 77 of his last 83.
Megill, who was drafted in the third round of the 2014 MLB Draft, posted a 5-4 record with a 3.60 ERA over 15 appearances and 12 starts for the Lions in 2015. The 6'8" right-hander logged 70 innings, striking out 70 en route to earning All-WCC honorable mention honors. Megill turned in his best outings down the stretch for LMU, registering a 0.93 ERA (3-1 | 29 IP | 3 ER | 30 K) over his last four starts, running his career total to 19 quality starts. If Megill elects to play professionally next year, he will leave LMU with the fourth-best ERA in LMU history (3.40) and second-best opponent batting average (.234). He also averaged 8.71 strikeouts per game, placing fifth in LMU history.
Welmon, who was also drafted in the 2014 MLB Draft, returned to LMU to finish a stellar four-year career in 2015. The fourth-year Friday starter registered a 6-6 record with a 2.68 ERA over 14 starts in his senior year. A native of Tustin, Calif., Welmon threw 94 innings and struck out 96 to only 28 walks. A three-time All-West Coast Conference selection, he leaves LMU with a 28-16 overall record and a 2.82 ERA over 374 innings pitched and 55 starts. His ERA, wins total and 2.06 walks-per-nine innings rank third in LMU history, while his innings pitched and games started marks rank fourth.
The 2015 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft concludes on Wednesday, June 10, with rounds 11-40. Coverage on MLB.com will begin at 9 a.m. PDT.
