The Pacific, Calif. native posted a team-best 1.89 ERA with a 4-1 record over 17 appearances and nine starts on the mound. Through 57 innings of work, he struck out 49 and allowed just a .201 batting average against. In WCC games alone, Watkins went 3-0 with a 2.08 ERA, tossing 43.1 innings and striking out 31. Offensively, he batted .266 with 22 runs scored, 22 RBI, seven doubles, a triple and six homers to finish tied for the team lead in round-trippers.
Watkins' stellar freshman year also stands out in LMU's single-season record book, as his 1.86 ERA and .201 batting average against are the second-best marks among pitchers with at least 50 innings pitched.
