June 3, 2015 Louisville Slugger Freshmen All-American List |
Sean Watkins was named a Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American according to Collegiate Baseball newspaper, it was announced on Wednesday morning. The Freshman All-American honor is the third over the last two years for LMU, as David Fletcher and Austin Miller were lauded last season. Watkins earned All-West Coast Conference honorable mention honors and a spot on the All-Freshman team earlier this year.
Earning the honor as a two-way player, when Watkins wasn't toeing the rubber as a starting pitcher, he was batting and patrolling right field. The Pacific, Calif. native posted a team-best 1.89 ERA with a 4-1 record over 17 appearances and nine starts on the mound. Through 57 innings of work, he struck out 49 and allowed just a .201 batting average against. In WCC games alone, Watkins went 3-0 with a 2.08 ERA, tossing 43.1 innings and striking out 31. Offensively, he batted .266 with 22 runs scored, 22 RBI, seven doubles, a triple and six homers to finish tied for the team lead in round-trippers.
Watkins' stellar freshman year also stands out in LMU's single-season record book, as his 1.86 ERA and .201 batting average against are the second-best marks among pitchers with at least 50 innings pitched.
With Watkins following Fletcher and Miller on the All-American list this year, this marks the first time since the 1989 (Joe Ciccarella) and 1990 (Chris Gomez and Bobby Hughes) seasons that LMU has had at least one Freshman All-American in consecutive years.
