The LMU baseball team (27-19-1, 13-10 WCC) was shut out for the first time this year on Saturday night, falling 1-0 to visiting San Diego (27-18, 16-7 WCC) to drop the series to the Toreros. LMU left 10 men on base, including two in scoring position to end the game.
Junior right-hander Trevor Megill was outstanding in his start for LMU, but he received no runs of support and made one costly mistake. The native of Huntington Beach, Calif. allowed a leadoff solo homer from Ryan Kirby in the third inning - the only damage done by the Toreros. Megill, who had to wiggle out of a handful of jams, surrendered just the one run on six hits and three walks while striking out a career-high tying 12 batters. With the tough-luck loss, Megill fell to 3-4 on the year.
The Lions had a wonderful chance to get on the board in the first when Austin Miller led off with a bunt single and moved to second on a throwing error. David Edwards followed with a ground ball to the right side to move the runner up to third with one out, but David Fletcher struck out looking and Jimmy Jack grounded out to strand the runner. LMU struck out 10 times on Saturday, including nine strikeouts over 8.1 innings of work from starter PJ Conlon. Conlon allowed just three hits and two walks to improve to 6-3 on the year.
The Lions once again had a runner at third and less than two out in the fourth as Ted Boeke drew a one-out walk in front of an error charged to Conlon to put runners at first and second. The Lions executed a double-steal to move the runners to second and third, but Billy Wilson and Cassidy Brown both struck out looking to end the threat. Of the 10 strikeouts on Saturday, six came with the Lions resting the bat on their shoulder. Friday's affair saw LMU strike out seven times looking.
Trailing 1-0 headed to the bottom of the ninth, LMU made things interesting. Ted Boeke reached with a hit-by-pitch before Ryan Erickson bunted Boeke to second. Anthony McIver entered from the Torero bullpen and promptly hit pinch-hitter Joe Christian to put runners at first and second. The Lions, who benefitted from four hit-by-pitches, once again called to the bench and summoned Sean Watkins, who grounded out slowly to third to move runners to second and third. With the tying and winning runs in scoring position, McIver struck out Miller to end the game and seal his seventh save of the year.
LMU was a combined 0-for-9 with two out on Saturday, and went 0-for-12 in RBI opportunities.
The Lions will celebrate Senior Day tomorrow and will look to salvage the series with a victory.
