The USD baseball team (26-18, 15-7 WCC) used three homers and a complete-game effort from David Hill to take the first game of a three-game WCC series over LMU (27-18-1, 13-9 WCC), 6-3, from LMU's Page Stadium. The three home runs accounted for five of USD's runs in the game.
Hill threw 147 pitches on Friday night, allowing three runs on six hits and three walks with 11 strikeouts. The complete game was his second of the year and moved him to 8-3 on the season.
Colton Waltner delivered a two-run homer in the first inning to put USD on the board before Ben Wylly notched his second of the year, a solo shot, in the second.
LMU answered the runs in both the first and second, plating a pair of its own in the opening frame before knotting the tally at 3-3 after two. Jimmy Jack had a two-run single in the first inning before a sacrifice fly from Cassidy Brown brought home Billy Wilson in the second. Wilson had reached with the first of his two triples on the night. Joining Wilson with a two-hit day was David Edwards, going 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored.
The game stayed tied at three all the way until the seventh when a leadoff hit-by-pitch issued by Colin Welmon eventually came around to score on an RBI-single from Jesse Jenner. Welmon, who was 3-0 with a .36 ERA over his previous three starts against USD, was saddled with the loss after allowing four runs on seven hits and two walks with nine strikeouts over seven innings. The loss dropped Welmon to 4-6 on the season.
The Toreros tacked on two more insurance runs on one big swing of the bat in the eighth. Designated hitter Riley Adams delivered the blow, sending a pitch from Michael Silva over the wall in left centerfield for his fourth homer of the season.
LMU will look to even the series with USD tomorrow at 6 p.m.
