Box Score April 25, 2015 Box Score
Redshirt-junior Trevor Megill turned in one of his best starts of his career on Saturday at Portland, throwing a career-high eight innings and allowing just an unearned run on four hits and two walks while striking out a season-best eight to guide LMU (27-16, 13-7 WCC) to a 7-1 victory over the Pilots (9-35, 4-16 WCC). The right-hander threw 109 pitches to move to 3-3 with the victory, handing LMU its fifth straight win along the way.
Sophomores Austin Miller and Ted Boeke each posted two RBI in the victory, with Boeke going 2-for-3 with two runs scored and his second homer of the year. Miller went 2-for-5 with a run scored hitting out of the leadoff spot.
David Fletcher, David Edwards, Sean Watkins and Jimmy Jack also posted two-hit games, helping LMU to 14 total hits, with Edwards, Watkins and Fletcher collecting multiple hits for the second straight game against Portland.
Senior right-hander Kurt Yinger got the start for Portland, dropping to 2-7 on the year after allowing seven runs (six earned) on 12 hits over 7.2 innings of work.
Portland got on the board first in the bottom of the first as Brady Kerr singled and came in to score on an error charged to Miller in centerfield. Kevin Wade delivered a single that ultimately resulted in the run, as Miller came in charging hard and had the ball roll under his glove and nearly to the wall.
Kerr and Wade were the only two Pilots to record a hit in the game, with Kerr going 3-for-3 with a walk and Wade going 2-for-4. Kerr's final hit came against senior Brandon Horth who made his first appearance of the year, tossing a scoreless ninth.
Although they surrendered the first-inning run, the Lions answered right back to take a lead they would not relinquish, scoring twice in the second inning go ahead 2-1. Edwards doubled to lead off the frame before coming in to score on an RBI-single from Jack. Jack moved up to second on an errant throw from right fielder Eric Sapp, and eventually came in to score on a safety squeeze bunt from Boeke.
A Kyle Dozier double, which extended his hit streak to six games, plated Miller in the fifth inning to stretch the Lion lead to 3-1 before a Watkins RBI-single and the solo homer from Boeke in the sixth made it a 5-1 game in favor of the Lions.
Two-out hitting proved big in LMU's two-run eighth inning as Boeke singled with two out to put runners at first and second. A wild pitch allowed the runners to move up 90 feet, setting the table for a two-RBI infield single from Miller to cap LMU's scoring run and hand the Lions the 7-1 victory. Miller grounded a ball up the middle where Michael Lucarelli slid behind second base and gloved the ball, but he did not have enough on the throw to get the speedy Miller racing down the line. Boeke, never hesitating on the play, turned third and scored as the relay from first to home was not in time.
LMU, which had lost the previous six straight games at Joe Etzel Field prior to this weekend, will look to record the road sweep of Portland tomorrow at 1 p.m.
