Lions Walk Off in Ninth to Even Series

Box Score April 18, 2015

Box Score

Sophomore Kyle Dozier delivered a two-out RBI-single in the bottom of the ninth to send LMU (23-16, 10-7 WCC) to its fourth walk-off victory of the year, this one to top Pacific (9-28, 6-11) by a count of 5-4 and even the three-game WCC series being played at LMU's Page Stadium. LMU has now walked-off with a victory in two of its last three games after leaving UNLV on the field on Tuesday.

Sophomore Ted Boeke reached with a one-out single in the bottom of the ninth inning before moving to second on a grounder to third. Pacific elected to intentionally walk leadoff man Austin Miller, setting up the at bat for Dozier. The left-hand hitter fell behind 0-2 in the count against closer Vince Arobio, but he got a fastball up and punched back up the middle and into centerfield, sending Boeke around third and in to score.

Senior Tanner Donnels led the way offensively for LMU, going 3-for-4 with two runs scored out of the fifth spot in the order. The Lions managed 10 total hits in the game, all coming for singles.

Junior Trevor Megill got the start for LMU and took a no-decision after allowing two runs on seven hits and two walks with five strikeouts over five innings of work. Freshman Tylor Megill was the first of three relievers used, going 1.2 innings and surrendering two runs on three hits before turning the ball over to Cory Abbott. The freshman right-hander threw the next 1.1 scoreless frames to bridge the gap to closer J.D. Busfield. The native of Valencia, Calif. allowed a hit and a walk in the ninth, but ultimately got out of the frame to improve to 3-1 with the victory.

LMU fell behind early as Pacific scored twice in the top of the first inning on a wild pitch and an RBI-single from Nate Verlin. The lead was cut in half in the bottom of the second as LMU took advantage of the first of three Tiger errors on Saturday night. Donnels singled with one out and moved to second on an errant throw from center fielder Tyler Sullivan. A wild pitch moved Donnels to third before Jimmy Jack contributed a run-scoring ground ball to run the tally to 2-1 in favor of the visitors.

The 2-1 lead held all the way to the seventh as Pacific scored twice in the top of the inning only to have LMU plate three of its own in the home-half to tie the game at four apiece. A two-out bases-loaded single from Dallas Correa, which followed one of three intentional walks issued by the Lions, drove in the two Tiger runs, but LMU refused to let the Tigers run too far.

The Lions pieced together three runs on three hits in the bottom of the seventh, with the game-tying run coming in to score on a pinch-hit RBI-single from freshman Jamey Smart.

Pacific had solid opportunities to score in both the eighth and ninth, but LMU pitching worked around the jams to keep the game tied. McKay Koissian delivered a one-out double down the right field line in the eighth, but he was thrown out trying to stretch the double into a triple. Brett Sullivan had a one-out triple in the ninth inning for Pacific, and ultimately moved to third on a wild pitch with two out on an intentional walk, but he was stranded there as Correa got jammed on an inside pitch and grounded out to third base to end the threat - sending the Lions into the bottom of the ninth and setting the stage for Dozier's heroics.

Though Arobio allowed the game-winning hit, Dozier was the only batter he faced, as he inherited runners from Sean Bennetts who went 2.1 innings and was charged with the game-winning run, pushing him to 0-5 on the season.

LMU will look to take the series from Pacific tomorrow at 1 p.m.
