RIVERSIDE, Calif. - The LMU softball team opened play at the Highlander Classic in Riverside Saturday with a doubleheader split against UNC Greensboro. The Lions won the opener 10-2 before dropping the second game, 12-3, in six innings.
Rachael Farrington improved to 5-6 in the circle with the complete-game victory. The sophomore allowed 11 hits, but kept the the Spartans in check, allowing just two earned runs - in each in the second and seventh innings. She did not issue a walk and fanned four.
Farrington got ample support from her battery, which had nine hits, including a pair of doubles and two home runs. Alex Finie led the way, going 3-for-4 with two RBIs and a run. Amanda Dirks had a three-run homer in the sixth and Alicia Brown knocked one out of the park for the third straight game.
After holding to a slim 2-1 lead through four complete, the Lions unloaded for two runs in the fifth, four in the sixth and two in the seventh.
LMU will play two more games on Sunday as part of the Highlander Classic, taking on Howard University at 9:00 a.m. followed by host UC Riverside at 11:30 a.m.
