LOS ANGELES - Freshman Alicia Brown pounded out five hits, including a pair of home runs, for six RBIs, leading LMU softball to a doubleheader sweep of visiting Howard University Wednesday at Smith Field.
The rookie went 3-for-3, including a double and a home run, with three RBI and two runs scored in the Lions' 10-0 game-one shutout. She followed that by going 2-for-4, including another double and long ball, with three RBI and one run scored in the 10-7 nightcap.
In the opener, the Lions (7-12) took a 2-0 lead in the second on a two-RBI Courtney Moore double to right center. Then came the deciding eight-run fourth that put the game away.
Brown began the big inning with a two-run homer over the left field fence. Three batters later, Rachel Williams' single to right-center, scored Moore. Amanda Dirks followed with an RBI-single to make it 6-0 before Stephanie Crist would blast a three-RBI double to center and Brown added an RBI-double to close out the scoring.
Brown finished 3-for-3 with three RBIs as the Lions totaled seven hits in the shortened game.
Rachael Farrington (4-6) tossed a one-hit, complete game for her fourth win of the year. The sophomore lefty struck out three in the five-inning game.
LMU continued to score big in the nightcap, posting a five-run first behind RBI-singles by Alex Finie and Crist, and a three-run shot by Brown. The Lions added three more runs in the second on a Williams solo shot and Crist two-run homer, making it 8-1 through two complete.
Howard would rally with one run in the third, one in the fourth, two in the fifth and two more in the seventh while the Lions added a solo run in the fourth and fifth innings. The Bison would go as far as to bring the potential game-tying runner to the plate in the top of the seventh. But reliever Farrington got a ground out to end the inning, and the game, collecting her second save of the year.
LMU returns to action on Saturday and Sunday, facing UNC Greensboro, Howard and UC Riverside in the Highlander Classic.
